Worldcoin’s ambitious project, World ID, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing two million sign-ups to its global identity protocol. This achievement was accomplished in less than half the time it took to reach one million sign-ups, indicating growing interest and adoption of the platform.
World ID aims to provide users with a “global digital passport” stored on their smartphones, enabling them to prove their identity securely while safeguarding their privacy through zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. To participate in the program and receive a digital passport, individuals must visit an orb, a five-pound chrome eye-scanning device, and scan one of their eyeballs. This process generates a unique “IrisHash” that verifies their uniqueness. Notably, users who successfully upload their biometric data are rewarded with Worldcoin, the project’s native cryptocurrency.
The surge in sign-ups can be attributed to Worldcoin’s recent multi-city tour across Barcelona, Berlin, and Tokyo. During the tour, the project gained an average of 40,000 new verified World ID members every week. Additionally, as demand increases, these eye-scanning devices are expected to become more widely available worldwide in the coming months.
Furthermore, Worldcoin highlighted the integration of World ID and Worldcoin into other protocols such as Okta’s Auth0 and Talent Protocol for onboarding procedures. This interoperability with established platforms demonstrates the growing recognition and utilization of World ID’s capabilities.
In May, Worldcoin launched the World App, a gas-free crypto wallet designed for verified humans, compatible with Android and iOS operating systems. The successful introduction of this wallet further solidifies Worldcoin’s commitment to providing user-friendly solutions within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
To support the expansion of the World ID program, Worldcoin raised $115 million in a Series C funding round on May 25. The funds will fuel the project’s future development and deployment plans.
Worldcoin’s rapid growth and increasing partnerships underline the significance of digital identity solutions and the demand for secure, privacy-preserving methods to prove one’s identity in an increasingly digital world. World ID’s innovation in combining biometrics, blockchain technology, and cryptocurrency rewards offers a unique approach to address the challenges posed by the Age of AI.
