In recent news, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has returned $312,219.71 in cash and 6.917 Bitcoin Cash (BCH) to cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex. The funds were seized in collaboration with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection as part of the ongoing efforts to recover assets stolen from Bitfinex during a security breach in August 2016.

The recovered assets will be distributed on a pro-rated basis to the victims of the 2016 Bitfinex hack. Bitfinex had previously issued Recovery Rights Tokens (RRT) valued at $1 each shortly after the breach occurred. Currently, there are 30 million RRTs in circulation. Once redeemed using the recovered assets, any remaining funds will be paid out to token holders of Unus Sed Leo (Leo), Bitfinex’s native token.
During the 2016 security breach, Bitfinex lost approximately 119,576 Bitcoins (BTC) belonging to its customers, valued at around $70 million at the time and now worth $3.7 billion. In February 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice arrested two individuals, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, for their alleged involvement in laundering cryptocurrencies connected to the hack. As part of the investigation, special agents were able to seize over 94,000 stolen BTC from the suspects by obtaining access to files containing private keys to their wallets.
Efforts to recover the remaining funds are still ongoing.
