ChatGPT Witnesses a Decline in Traffic in June, but Maintains Lead Among AI Chatbot Competitors

ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI, experienced a decrease in worldwide traffic during the month of June. According to data estimates from Similarweb, desktop and mobile web traffic for ChatGPT dropped by 9.7% in June, with a decline of 5.7% in unique visitors and 8.5% in the time users spent on the site. In the United States, the recorded month-on-month decline in website traffic was 10.3%.

Despite the decline, ChatGPT continues to maintain its position ahead of competitors such as Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Bing, and Character AI, another popular AI-powered chatbot. Preliminary data indicates that ChatGPT outperforms these competitors in terms of traffic.

Speculations on the Drop in Traffic

Some speculate that the drop in traffic could be attributed to ChatGPT’s user base primarily consisting of students who are currently on summer break, or the novelty factor of the AI chatbot wearing off. However, a community member raised an alternative perspective, suggesting that the reported decline may not account for traffic from ChatGPT’s recently-released iOS application. The Twitter user proposed that there could have been a change in how users access ChatGPT since the launch of the mobile app on May 18. Initially available in the United States, OpenAI plans to expand the release to other countries in the upcoming weeks.

Innovation in the AI Field

In other news, Lighting Labs, the development firm behind the Bitcoin Lightning Network, has introduced tools for AI to send and receive Bitcoin (BTC) on its layer-2 solution. This toolkit aims to facilitate faster, cheaper, and easier payments for developers working on AI-focused projects.

Despite a decline in traffic, ChatGPT remains a prominent AI chatbot and continues to outperform competitors like Google’s Bard and Character AI. OpenAI’s recent release of the ChatGPT iOS application may have contributed to changes in how users access and interact with the AI chatbot. As the field of AI evolves, monitoring web traffic and analyzing user behavior will provide valuable insights for further development and improvement of these conversational AI systems.
