Google Play Store Embraces NFT Games, Excludes Gambling

In an official announcement, Google Play Store has updated its policies to allow the inclusion of nonfungible token (NFT) games on its platform. The decision aims to provide opportunities for game developers to leverage blockchain-based digital content and enhance user loyalty through unique NFT rewards. However, it explicitly prohibits gambling activities within these games.

The move by Google Play follows previous actions taken by the platform, such as banning crypto mining apps in 2018 and removing a video game called Bitcoin Blast due to deceptive practices in 2020. Similarly, Apple’s App Store had previously stated that NFTs obtained outside the app store should not grant special benefits in games or risk being banned. Additionally, Apple requires a 30% fee for NFTs sold through its App Store version of a game.

Contrary to concerns raised by industry experts about potential restrictions on mobile NFT games, Google Play’s new policy welcomes these games on Android devices as long as they adhere to specific guidelines. Developers must clearly disclose if their games enable users to buy or earn NFTs or cryptocurrencies, without glamorizing potential earnings or involving gambling elements such as loot boxes.

As per the updated policy, games are allowed to offer tokenized assets and explore innovative concepts by incorporating user-owned content into traditional gaming experiences. Google Play collaborated with Web3 gaming leaders to establish these guidelines and intends to maintain ongoing engagement with developers to better grasp their challenges and opportunities.

It’s worth noting that Steam, the largest PC game distributor globally, has imposed bans on Web3 games. In contrast, Epic Games, a competitor of Steam, recently introduced Gods Unchained, an NFT card game, in its store.

Google’s decision to embrace NFT games on its platform provides game developers with a significant opportunity to tap into the growing market of blockchain-based digital content. By setting clear guidelines and cooperating with industry leaders, Google Play aims to foster an ecosystem that promotes user engagement while ensuring responsible practices within the gaming industry.

Conclusion

Overall, this policy update signifies Google Play’s recognition of the potential value and appeal of NFT games, while also emphasizing the need to maintain ethical standards by excluding gambling elements from these experiences.
