Google’s DeepMind to Develop More Powerful AI System ‘Gemini’ than ChatGPT

According to a Wired report, Google’s DeepMind is developing a new large language model (LLM) called ‘Gemini,’ which will be more capable than OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT. The CEO of DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, said that Gemini would combine some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the language capabilities of large models while also including new innovations. Gemini is still months away from official launch and will cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to develop.

The development of Gemini comes shortly after Google hastily launched its own chatbot, Bard, which competes with ChatGPT, but reportedly faced internal skepticism from former Google employees over societal concerns. Additionally, regulators in Ireland blocked Bard’s launch within the European Union due to Google’s failure to file necessary paperwork.

Hassabis stressed the urgent need for further research into the potential risks posed by advanced AI systems. He previously predicted that human-level AI could emerge before 2033.
